Delegations from the National People's Congress Ethnic Affairs Committee, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, Yunnan Province, and Kunming City expressed their congratulations on the 40th anniversary of the founding of Luquan Yi and Miao Autonomous County.
Luquan Yi and Miao Autonomous County was established on November 25, 1985. Currently, it has a total population of 483,800. Located in north-central Yunnan, on the banks of the Jinsha River, it is known as "a land of three rivers and one lake, a land of Yi songs and Miao dances."
Zhang Jinhua, Deputy Secretary of the Luquan County Committee of the Communist Party of China and County Head of the Luquan County People's Government, stated that over the past 40 years, the people of all ethnic groups in the county have earnestly implemented the Party's ethnic policies and fully implemented the system of regional ethnic autonomy. All ethnic groups live in harmony, work together, and develop in a harmonious manner, bringing about tremendous changes to the Luquan area. In 2024, Luquan County achieved a GDP of 18.634 billion yuan, 185 times that of 1985; local fiscal revenue reached 836 million yuan, 100 times that of 1985; and the per capita disposable income of all residents reached 22,000 yuan, 24 times that of 1985.
Over the past 40 years, Luquan County has focused on strengthening the sense of community of the Chinese nation, with all ethnic groups working together for common development. The excellent cultures of all ethnic groups have blended and flourished, and the county has successfully been designated a "National Model County for Ethnic Unity and Progress."
Furthermore, the county has continuously improved people's well-being, achieved universal and inclusive preschool education, balanced development of compulsory education, and continuous improvement in the quality of senior high school education, realizing the transformation from "having access to education" to "having access to quality education." The medical security system has been continuously improved, and medical service capabilities have been greatly enhanced.
In addition, the county has continuously transformed its urban and rural landscape, comprehensively promoted integrated urban-rural development, and implemented urban renewal and rural construction initiatives. The county seat has expanded east-west and north-south, with a built-up area reaching 7.3 square kilometers, 12 times the size of 1985. It has successfully become a National Sanitary County and a National Garden County. A number of key transportation projects have been completed, achieving 100% road accessibility and 90% paving rate for natural villages. The county has also carried out comprehensive upgrading of 83 ethnic minority villages, renovating housing for 75,000 households, resulting in a completely new urban and rural landscape.
At the celebration, guests enjoyed a wonderful cultural performance. The grand Yi ethnic drum dance, "Luowu Divine Drum," opened the event with a powerful performance, offering blessings. The beautifully melodious local original song, "Nostalgia in the Clouds," welcomed those working away from home to return and start businesses. The Miao dance, "Unity Song," featured pleated skirts swirling like auspicious clouds, while the lusheng melody resonated with the vows of unity among people of all ethnic groups. The local original revolutionary song, "The Army and the People Unite to Fight the Perilous Pass," depicted the life-and-death struggle at Jiaoping Ferry and the deep bond between the army and the people, reminding everyone to remember history, honor the martyrs, cherish peace, and create a better future. The performance concluded with everyone singing "Ode to the Motherland," bringing the event to a climax.
In addition to the 40th anniversary celebration, Luquan County held a series of exciting activities from November 21st to December 1st, including a long street banquet and cultural performances, inviting guests from all directions to experience "a life called Yunnan." (End)
