Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – According to the Indonesian National Narcotics Agency (BNN), on June 23, during a large-scale anti-drug operation conducted from April to June across 20 provinces in Indonesia, 285 people were arrested, including 29 women and 7 foreigners, and 680 kilograms of various drugs were seized.
BNN Director General Martinus revealed that authorities also uncovered two drug trafficking networks involved in money laundering, seizing assets worth over 26 billion rupiah (approximately US$1.5 million).
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Indonesia is one of Asia's major drug trafficking hubs due to its large population and role as a drug transit point. In May of this year, the Riau provincial government seized over 3.9 tons of drugs transported by sea.
In 2024 alone (up to November), Indonesia cracked over 56,000 drug cases, seizing approximately 7.5 tons of methamphetamine and 3.3 tons of marijuana, with a total value exceeding US$450 million, and arresting over 27,000 suspects.
Meanwhile, Indonesia is enforcing strict anti-drug laws. Earlier this month, three British citizens were sentenced to death for trafficking nearly 1 kilogram of cocaine in Bali. Currently, Indonesia has approximately 530 death row inmates, including 96 foreigners, mostly convicted of drug-related crimes. (End)
