
Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – On the morning of December 8th, with the announcement of the last functional constituency member, all 90 members of the 8th Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) were elected. The second Legislative Council election since Hong Kong's electoral system was improved was successfully completed.
The election was held from 7:30 am to 11:30 pm on December 7th, with 161 candidates vying for each seat.
The atmosphere at the central ballot counting station set up at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre was solemn and enthusiastic. Staff members counted and confirmed the ballots one by one in a tense but orderly manner. After an overnight count, all 40 members elected by the Election Committee, 30 members elected by functional constituencies, and 20 members elected by geographical constituencies were elected.
Luk Kai-hong, Chairman of the Hong Kong SAR Electoral Affairs Commission, said on the morning of December 8th that he was encouraged by the public's participation in the vote. During the election process, staff and interviewed voters provided positive and encouraging messages.
Among the newly elected legislators are both first-time candidates and seasoned veterans re-elected with high vote counts; there are star legislators from various fields, such as Elaine Kong and Kenneth Fok, as well as seasoned local figures.
Re-elected Legislative Council member Ng Chau-pei stated that he will continue to approach his work in the Legislative Council with humility. Newly elected Legislative Council member Fong Kwok-shan expressed gratitude for the public's trust. She noted that the public's demands for livelihood are very clear, and that the work of legislators will be arduous in the future, requiring even greater humility. Her immediate priority is assisting with disaster relief and post-disaster recovery, helping the victims of the Tai Po Hung Fook Estate rebuild their homes.
Elaine Kong, elected as a legislator representing the tourism sector, expressed her honor at her election and thanked the industry for its support. Kong emphasized that tourism is one of Hong Kong's pillar industries, and she will act as a policy advocate and a bridge between society, speaking out for the public, promoting tourism development, and quickly dedicating herself to her work, uniting the industry, and serving Hong Kong.
In this election, over 600 polling stations were opened throughout Hong Kong, allowing approximately 4.13 million registered voters to cast their ballots. Voter turnout in all three constituencies of the Legislative Council exceeded that of the previous election.
The term of the eighth Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will begin on January 1, 2026, and will last for four years. (End)
