Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – On New Year's Day, during the holiday, "Dehua," a male proboscis monkey cub at Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park, celebrated his 100th day and officially met the public. In the proboscis monkey exhibit, "Dehua," nestled against his mother "Diwen's" chest, is distinctly different from other family members. His signature long nose is not yet visible, and he is entirely black with a blue face.
As the youngest member of the family and the 15th proboscis monkey born at Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park, "Dehua" was born on September 24, 2025. He is currently completely dependent on his mother's milk, drinking more than ten times a day. Keeper Sun Chunliang explained that "Dehua" has already shown his lively nature and has begun to try climbing without his mother's embrace.
It is reported that the proboscis monkey's nursing period is relatively long; cubs typically need to be 1 to 1.5 years old to be fully weaned, and begin to try eating tender leaves around 6 months of age. During this period, the mother monkey provides meticulous care, and other family members also assist in the care. Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park is the only proboscis monkey conservation and habitat in China, home to two major proboscis monkey families, led by "Dewa" and "Nakula". Since the successful birth of China's first proboscis monkey cub in 2018, the park has seen a string of good news, successfully producing 15 second- and third-generation proboscis monkeys to date, with two more cubs expected to be born in 2025.
Data shows that due to habitat destruction, the proboscis monkey faces extinction and was listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List in 2000. Currently, only about 2,000 proboscis monkeys remain worldwide. To effectively rescue and conserve this endangered species, the Guangdong Chimelong Group has meticulously prepared for nearly 20 years. Team members have traveled to Indonesia five times for on-site learning and have specifically designated 20 acres of land within the park to plant tree species specifically for proboscis monkeys.
Mr. Chen, a local tourist from Guangzhou, said, "I brought my family here during the New Year's Day holiday, and we happened to be there during the proboscis monkey's 100-day celebration. Seeing how adorable it is, and learning even more that proboscis monkeys are an endangered species, it's truly amazing that Chimelong can breed so many. It also makes us understand the importance of protecting these rare animals."
It is understood that Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park houses 56 species of primates, making it one of the world's most diverse primate conservation bases. (End)
