Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – On February 3rd local time, South African police disclosed that a mass shooting occurred near a town in Gauteng Province, South Africa, resulting in 6 deaths and more than ten injuries.
According to reports from South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and other media outlets, Fred Kekana, Deputy Commissioner of the Gauteng Provincial Police, revealed that a minibus traveling towards neighboring Lesotho was ambushed by multiple gunmen near Mayerton, Gauteng Province, resulting in the deaths of 6 people on board and injuries to more than ten others.
Preliminary verification by South African police indicates that all passengers on the bus and the suspects who carried out the attack were Lesotho nationals. The victims included four women. The death toll could have risen further had the bus driver not distracted the gunmen by turning.
Following the attack, the gunmen hijacked a car in an attempt to escape, subsequently engaging in a pursuit with South African police. Three individuals were arrested.
South African police have cordoned off the scene and dispatched a forensic team to conduct a further investigation into the motive for the attack.
According to reports from AFP, Nigeria's *Punch* newspaper, and other media outlets, South Africa is currently facing a high crime rate, with frequent gun violence incidents. Approximately 200,000 to 300,000 gun-related crimes occur annually, mostly related to murder, kidnapping, robbery, and gang warfare. In two mass shootings last December, gunmen attacked a hotel and a bar, respectively, resulting in more than 20 deaths, including several children. (End)
