Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – According to recent news from the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, Chongqing's automotive industry reached a new high in 2025, with annual automobile production reaching 2.788 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 9.7%. It maintained its position as the top city in China and the third-largest province/municipality, surpassing Shenzhen after nine years to reclaim the title of "China's No. 1 Automobile City."
It is understood that, based on the statistical information and industry trends released by various cities for January to November 2025, Chongqing has already secured the title of "China's No. 1 Automobile City" for the year. Chongqing ranked first in automobile production among Chinese cities for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016. However, due to the painful transition of the automotive industry towards electrification and intelligentization, production declined, falling to 1.383 million vehicles in 2019. In recent years, with the effective implementation of new energy vehicle development, Chongqing's automotive industry has gradually recovered and achieved a strong comeback.
The recovery of Chongqing's automotive industry is attributed to the comprehensive upgrading of its industrial clusters. Currently, Chongqing has formed a complete vehicle system driven by two leading companies, Changan Automobile and Seres Group, with more than 10 vehicle manufacturers involved. It has also built an intelligent connected new energy vehicle parts industry cluster covering 3 major systems, 12 major assemblies, and 56 components. In terms of production efficiency, the Liangjiang New Area's super factory for automobiles achieves a rapid production line rollout of new energy vehicles in 3 minutes, significantly improving its intelligent manufacturing level.
Data shows that in 2025, Chongqing's new energy vehicle production reached 1.296 million units, accounting for 46.5% of the city's total automobile production, a year-on-year increase of 36%, with the automobile industry cluster exceeding 800 billion yuan in scale. Furthermore, the statistical method for automobile production in 2025 changed from "location of the enterprise's legal entity" to "place of production." This adjustment also had some impact on the ranking among cities, but the core driving force still stems from the effectiveness of Chongqing's automobile industry's transformation towards high-end, intelligent, and green development, as well as a series of supportive policies introduced by the local government.
Currently, Chongqing is engaged in comprehensive competition with cities such as Shanghai and Shenzhen in the field of new energy vehicles. Industry insiders say that the competition for "China's No. 1 Automobile City" is not simply a contest of production output, but a comprehensive competition of industrial systems, innovation capabilities, and cluster effects. Chongqing, which has regained the top spot, is moving at full speed toward becoming a world-class automobile industry cluster.
