*People's Literature*, founded in 1949, is the first national-level large-scale literary journal in New China, possessing high authority and representativeness, witnessing and promoting the development of contemporary Chinese literature. *Lume* is the tenth foreign language version of *People's Literature*.
It is reported that the Portuguese version is named "Lume," which originally means light or radiance, and by extension, it signifies guidance, like a lamp on the road of life, illuminating the path forward with rich life experiences and enlightening people's hearts with profound wisdom. This name not only embodies the humanistic warmth of Chinese literature but also expresses the beautiful vision of letting the light of Chinese literature shine brightly in the Portuguese-speaking world and promoting mutual learning among civilizations.
Giorgio Sinedino, Portuguese editor-in-chief of *People's Literature* and assistant professor at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Macau, pointed out that the translation team brings together outstanding translators from China, Brazil, and Portugal, consistently adhering to the principle of "upholding tradition while innovating." They strictly adhere to the original text's ideological content and artistic style while fully considering the reading habits and aesthetic needs of Portuguese readers, striving to accurately convey the charm, depth, and emotional warmth of Chinese literary language.
The inaugural issue of *Lume* is led by Mo Yan, China's first Nobel laureate in Literature. It features short stories by six writers—Liang Xiaosheng, Dong Xiaqingqing, Sonam Tsering, Chen Chuncheng, and Yang Zhihan—essays by Wu Zhiliang and Chen Cang, and poems by Yao Feng and Zhai Yongming. It showcases Chinese writers and poets' understanding and artistic exploration of "life," one of humanity's most important literary themes, presenting a diverse landscape of contemporary Chinese literature.
Wu Zhiliang, president of the Macau Cultural Federation, pointed out that Macau, as an important bridge for China's opening up to the outside world, plays an irreplaceable role in Sino-Western cultural exchange. Lume not only opens a new window for the Portuguese-speaking world to understand Chinese literature and culture, but also further activates the cultural value of the China-Portuguese platform, promoting contemporary Chinese literature to reach more Portuguese-speaking countries through Macao as a "cultural hub."
