
Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – On January 20, 2026, the annual consultation meeting between the Thai representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and civil society was held at the Phyathai Eastin Hotel in Bangkok. Ms. Chatwathit Chindawong, Deputy Minister for ASEAN Affairs, and Dr. Dr. Banubatra Kittiang, Assistant Professor and Representative of Thailand to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) for 2025-2027, co-chaired the meeting. More than 80 representatives from government agencies, civil society, academia, and partner organizations gathered to discuss the future development of human rights in ASEAN.

The meeting focused on reviewing and summarizing achievements, exchanging consensus, and planning for the future. It highlighted the achievements of the ASEAN Human Rights Commission (AICHR) in 2025 and key developments in the field of human rights in ASEAN. In-depth discussions were held on core issues such as the formulation of the 2026 AICHR work plan and the pathway for advancing the ASEAN human rights agenda, further strengthening the effectiveness of the Thai representative to the AICHR in regional human rights affairs. During the meeting, delegates engaged in lively discussions on a number of key human rights issues, covering crucial areas such as the coordinated development of the environment and human rights, protection of children's rights, women's empowerment, protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, care for the elderly, and safeguarding the rights of migrant workers. They also exchanged views and reached a consensus on human rights work related to Thailand's preparations for its 2028 ASEAN chairship.

This meeting, jointly hosted by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Thai branch of the ASEAN Human Rights Commission, is an important annual event and has become a vital bridge for communication between government departments and civil society. The meeting consistently adheres to the principle of comprehensively reflecting the legitimate needs of the Thai people and safeguarding the common interests of the ASEAN Community. Through regular and institutionalized consultations and exchanges, it consolidates the efforts of the government and civil society, injecting lasting momentum into the high-quality development of human rights in the ASEAN region and the improvement of the regional human rights governance system.
