Cambodian Phnom Penh police have dismantled a gang of fake police officers who kidnapped and extorted Chinese citizens.

  Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – Phnom Penh police in Cambodia recently cracked a serious case involving the kidnapping and extortion of a Chinese citizen by impersonating law enforcement officers. As of November 19, eight suspects had been arrested, and a number of tools used in the crime, including vehicles, firearms, and counterfeit documents, were seized.

  According to a report by Lieutenant General Chun Narin, Chief of Police of Phnom Penh, on November 21, at 3:20 AM on November 15, an illegal detention and extortion case occurred in Street 352, Village 8, Sangkat 1, Van Kheng District, Phnom Penh. A group of suspects, posing as military police, abducted a Chinese man and demanded a ransom of US$52,000.

  Following the incident, the Phnom Penh Police Department's Major Crimes Unit quickly launched an investigation. Through professional investigative methods and cross-regional cooperation, they collaborated with police departments in 14 districts of the city, as well as police in Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville provinces, to conduct a simultaneous search operation. On November 19, police successfully identified and arrested all eight suspects involved in the case.

  During the operation, law enforcement officers seized two vehicles used in the crimes (a white Prescott, license plate number Kampot 2B-8818; and a gray Prescott, license plate number Phnom Penh 2BQ-8101), four firearms, 38 rounds of ammunition, seven pairs of handcuffs, four sets of military police uniforms, two copies of military police identification cards, six mobile phones, and one backpack.

  Under interrogation, the eight suspects confessed to a series of crimes, admitting to committing a total of six kidnapping and extortion cases. Currently, all suspects have been transferred to the Phnom Penh Police Department's Serious Crimes Unit and will be tried by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court according to law.
