  According to a report from the Ministry of Emergency Management of China on October 11th, various natural disasters in China caused direct economic losses of 24.858 billion yuan (RMB) in October.

  Recently, the Office of the National Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Relief Committee, together with relevant member units, conducted a joint analysis of the natural disaster situation in China in October 2025. In October, various natural disasters affected 7.3585 million people nationwide to varying degrees, resulting in 9 deaths, the emergency relocation and resettlement of 427,900 people requiring emergency living assistance, the collapse of nearly 600 households and over 1,400 rooms, the damage to over 6,000 households and 12,000 rooms, and the affected area of ​​crops reaching 460,900 hectares, with direct economic losses amounting to 24.858 billion yuan.

  In October, four typhoons formed in the Northwest Pacific and South China Sea, one of which made landfall in China. The number of typhoons forming and making landfall was higher than the average for the same period in previous years. Typhoon Matmo, the 21st typhoon of the year, was the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Guangdong and the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Guangxi during the same period since 1951. It brought strong winds and heavy rain to the coastal areas of South China, causing urban flooding in Zhanjiang and Maoming in Guangdong, and persistent flooding in Baise and other areas of Guangxi. Coastal aquaculture suffered severe damage. Typhoon Matmo affected 3.584 million people to varying degrees in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, and Yunnan, damaging 82,900 hectares of crops and causing direct economic losses of 21.928 billion yuan.

  In October, there were six regional rainstorm events across the country, with an average rainfall of 54.3 mm, 52.4% higher than the same period in normal years. Continuous rainy weather occurred from western China to North China and the Huanghuai region, with rainfall days generally reaching 12 to 16 days, causing floods that significantly impacted nine provinces and municipalities, including Henan, Anhui, and Sichuan, hindering the autumn harvest. In total, floods and geological disasters affected 3.6394 million people to varying degrees, resulting in 8 deaths. 149,200 people were urgently relocated or required emergency living assistance. Over 1,300 houses collapsed, over 8,900 houses were damaged, and 364,400 hectares of crops were affected, causing direct economic losses of 2.816 billion yuan.

  In October, 13 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or higher occurred in mainland China, an increase compared to the average for the same period in previous years. (End)
