Southeast Asia Information Harbor (www.dnyxxg.com) – On July 14, the Malaysian Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) announced controls on the export, transshipment, and transit of high-performance chips from the United States used in artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

According to the ministry's statement, effective immediately, all activities related to high-performance AI chips manufactured in the United States will require a Strategic Trade Permit. This regulation is based on Section 12 of Malaysia's Strategic Trade Act 2010, which requires individuals or organizations to notify the relevant authorities at least 30 days in advance if they believe there is a risk of abuse before transporting goods not included in the Strategic Items List (SIL).

The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry stated that this move aims to close legal loopholes, and Malaysia is also evaluating whether to include US-made high-performance AI chips in the SIL. While reiterating its commitment to promoting trade and investment facilitation in accordance with international practices, the ministry emphasized that all organizations operating in Malaysia must comply with global export regulations.
