
Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim paid a two-day visit to Thailand from April 17th to 18th. This was Anwar Ibrahim's second visit to Thailand since taking office in 2022.
During his visit, Anwar Ibrahim met with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and pledged to promote inclusive and sustainable regional economic development with a greater focus on people-centeredness. This included strengthening cooperation with Thailand. Anwar Ibrahim highly praised the bilateral cooperation with Thailand in recent years.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra emphasized the continued strengthening of cooperation with Malaysia, particularly in the halal and rubber industries in border areas, committed to the common interests of both countries.
During the meeting, the Thai and Malaysian prime ministers attended the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction agreement (CA) of the Sungai Golok-Rantau Panjang Bridge project. Both sides reiterated their commitment to resolving the new US tariffs through the ASEAN framework. During a meeting with Thai business leaders, Anwar Ibrahim stated that Malaysia is willing to support Thai investors in the sectors of power and electronics (E&E), electric vehicles, chemicals, advanced materials, the digital economy, renewable energy, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), aerospace, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. According to the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in 2024, Thailand became Malaysia's seventh largest trading partner globally and third largest trading partner in ASEAN, with total trade reaching US$25.03 billion.
