Myanmar attaches great importance to the Chinese Lunar New Year. In 2023 and 2024, Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing attended Spring Festival celebrations jointly held by the overseas Chinese community in Myanmar and the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar in Yangon. During these events, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Chen Hai discussed the matter of designating the Chinese Lunar New Year as a public holiday with Min Aung Hlaing.
According to Myanmar's official newspaper, *New Light of Myanmar*, Myanmar is following the practices of other ASEAN countries and globally. The report stated that this move aims to strengthen the friendly "brotherly" relationship between Myanmar and China.
As previously reported, in February 2023, the New York City Council passed a "Lunar New Year Resolution," making the Lunar New Year a statutory holiday in New York City.
According to incomplete statistics, Spring Festival folk activities have spread to nearly 200 countries and regions worldwide. With some countries and regions recognizing it as a statutory holiday, the Chinese New Year has become a global symbol of celebration.
In Indonesia, the Chinese New Year was declared a national public holiday in 2002.
In October 2016, the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, officially passed a law making the Chinese New Year a state holiday, thus designating February as "Chinese New Year Commemoration Month."
On September 30, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill making the Chinese Lunar New Year a statutory holiday in California.
On December 29, 2020, the Thai Cabinet decided to add several special statutory holidays in 2021 to promote domestic tourism, including the Chinese Lunar New Year.
