Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Cambodian Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, Ms. Phong Sakna, recently addressed the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, expressing deep regret over the severe damage suffered by the Preah Vihear Temple, a World Heritage Site.
Minister Phong Sakna pointed out that during the border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand on July 24-25 this year, Thai troops used artillery shells and F-16 fighter jets to bomb the Preah Vihear Temple, causing serious and irreparable damage to this precious cultural heritage. Cambodia deeply regrets this action and emphasizes that any military action against World Heritage Sites is an infringement on the common wealth of humanity.
To protect and preserve cultural heritage, Minister Phong Sakna appealed to the international community, inviting major museums and private collectors to actively participate in the repatriation of lost cultural relics. She emphasized that Cambodia has ratified all UNESCO cultural conventions, fully demonstrating its strong commitment to the protection of global cultural heritage.
Cambodia reiterated its high regard for its partnership with UNESCO and will continue to promote development in education, culture, science, and communication in accordance with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Cambodia also called for the establishment of an information system that is ethical and respects cultural diversity, and hopes that all member states can work together to protect and preserve world cultural heritage.
