Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – On April 29, the Cambodian National Police General Commissariat and the Korean National Police Agency held a bilateral meeting in Seoul, co-chaired by Cambodian National Police General Commissioner Sok Thong and Korean National Police Agency Acting Commissioner Yoo Jae-sung. Both sides reached a deep consensus, deciding to formally expand the functions of the existing cross-border joint working group from solely combating telecommunications and online fraud to include combating cross-border drug trafficking and distribution, and the flow of illegal online gambling funds.

Both sides clarified that cross-border crime, with cybercrime at its core, poses a serious global security challenge, and strengthening intelligence sharing and law enforcement cooperation is crucial to ensuring the safety of citizens of both countries and maintaining regional order. The meeting highly commended the initial achievements of the joint working group: approved in October 2025 and launched in December 2025, the working group's initial objective was to combat telecommunications and online fraud targeting South Korean citizens. In the first phase of operations from December 2025 to March 2026, 166 major criminal suspects (including several South Korean fugitives wanted in Cambodia) were successfully apprehended, and 5 South Korean citizens were rescued.

Based on a solid foundation of cooperation, the police departments of the two countries signed an agreement to upgrade the functions of the working group. The aim is to establish a real-time intelligence sharing and joint investigation mechanism, and to precisely target transnational criminal groups attempting to establish "crime hubs" in Southeast Asia, in accordance with bilateral laws, thereby completely eradicating cross-border crime chains.
