Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – On February 1st, Uruguayan President Orsi arrived in Beijing for a seven-day state visit to China. This visit has attracted widespread attention.

On the same day, the official website of the Uruguayan Presidential Palace published an article stating that President Orsi's state visit to China reflects Uruguay's strategic commitment to strengthening international integration, exploring new opportunities for trade and investment, deepening cooperation in key areas such as science and technology, and consolidating bilateral relations. This visit will contribute to Uruguay's economic growth and development.

In 2025, China will continue to be Uruguay's largest export market. According to the annual foreign trade report released by the Uruguayan Century 21 Investment and Export Promotion Agency, Uruguay's exports to China reached US$3.493 billion in 2025, accounting for 26% of Uruguay's total exports, an increase of approximately 12% compared to 2024.

In the same year, China will also be Uruguay's largest source of imports, accounting for approximately 26% of Uruguay's total imports. Major imported goods include machinery and equipment, electronic products, vehicles and parts, and chemical products. Automobiles are Uruguay's largest import from China, followed by electrical equipment and machinery.

According to a report by the South American news agency Merco Press, the visit coincides with the 38th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Uruguay and China. Uruguayan President Orsi led a delegation of approximately 150 people to China, aiming to "strengthen economic ties with Uruguay's largest trading partner."

The report points out that a major focus of the visit is cooperation in education and science and technology. The University of the Republic of Uruguay, a renowned Uruguayan university, stated that it will sign cooperation agreements or memorandums of understanding with Chinese universities, well-known enterprises, and research institutions specializing in water resources and hydropower. Specific projects include student and academic exchanges, joint laboratory construction, and the application of artificial intelligence in the medical and health field.

An article in the Spanish newspaper El País points out that for every $4 of Uruguay's export revenue, $1 comes from China. For over a decade, as the largest buyer of Uruguayan products, China has supported Uruguay's economic growth and has become a "key driving force" for improving the living standards of the Uruguayan people.

The report states that the Uruguayan government, led by President Olsi, deeply recognizes the importance of China and has therefore led an unprecedented delegation to China. The delegation includes dozens of high-ranking officials, such as provincial governors and ministers, as well as business leaders and entrepreneurs.

The report also notes that this is Uruguay's largest official delegation to date, aimed at further deepening bilateral relations with China. According to Uruguayan officials, the visit will result in the signing of several cooperation agreements, with a focus on cooperation in the fields of technology and innovation.
