Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – The UK Ministry of Defence and the Department for Education jointly announced on the 21st that the first defense-specific undergraduate degree program on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be launched at the New Technology and Engineering Institute (NMITE) in Hereford in September 2026. The program aims to train professionals in advanced UAV technology for the British Armed Forces.
The three-year program, funded by the British Army, plans to enroll 15 civilian students and 5 military cadets annually. Drawing on real-world experience from the conflict in Ukraine, the curriculum focuses on unmanned systems operation, defense, and related STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills. Graduates will possess the capability to develop UAV technology for both military applications and civilian commercial sectors.
The Ministry of Defence stated that this program is one year shorter than traditional university engineering master's programs, allowing students to enter the professional field more quickly.
A spokesperson for the British Armed Forces stated that UAV casualties in the conflict in Ukraine have exceeded those caused by artillery, highlighting a new form of modern warfare. This degree program provides young engineers with a fast track to cutting-edge fields.
This course is an important component of the UK's Strategic Defence Review, aiming to significantly enhance the British military's combat capabilities through artificial intelligence, drones, and autonomous systems technologies. (End)
