Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – A flag-raising ceremony for Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Latvia, and Liberia was held on January 2nd outside the Security Council Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, marking the start of their duties as non-permanent members of the Security Council.
On the same day, Kazakhstan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Umarov, presided over the ceremony. The Security Council's rotating president for this month, Somalia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Osman, welcomed the new members and expressed his expectation that they would contribute to maintaining peace and security. Representatives from the five countries delivered speeches and then placed their respective national flags on their flagpoles.

According to reports, Bahrain and three other countries are replacing Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia, with their terms beginning on January 1, 2026. The other five non-permanent members of the Security Council are Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia, whose terms end at the end of 2026.
As one of the main organs of the United Nations, the Security Council consists of 15 members: five permanent members (China, the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, and France) and ten non-permanent members. Non-permanent members serve two-year terms, with five seats elected annually, and they cannot be re-elected. The 15 members of the Security Council rotate the presidency for one month at a time. (End)
