Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – Vietnam's Ministry of Construction recently issued a formal decision to temporarily close Lien Giang International Airport (the first international airport in the Central Highlands), located in Duc Trong District, Lam Dong Province, from 00:00 on March 4, 2026 to 23:59 on August 25, 2026, for approximately five months, in order to implement runway and taxiway maintenance projects and ensure flight safety and long-term operational efficiency.

The core purpose of this temporary closure is to advance the "Lien Giang International Airport Runway and Taxiway Maintenance Project." Through comprehensive renovation and upgrading of the airport's infrastructure, the project aims to ensure flight safety and lay the foundation for future service capacity upgrades. The maintenance project has completed the required approval process: the investment proposal and construction design plan were approved by the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), reviewed by the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, and strictly adhered to civil aviation laws and relevant regulations on transportation infrastructure management before being finally submitted to the Ministry of Construction for approval. To ensure the safe and continuous operation of aviation activities during construction, the Ministry of Construction has clarified the responsibilities of all parties: the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam is instructed to issue temporary airport closure notices through the aviation information system, simultaneously informing local governments and relevant agencies; the Construction Infrastructure Department, Southern Airport Authority, Vietnam Airports Corporation, Lien Quang International Airport, and Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation are required to cooperate and strictly implement project progress and safety management requirements.

As the first international airport in the Central Highlands, the maintenance and upgrade of Lien Quang International Airport is of great significance. Upon completion, the project will significantly enhance the airport's operational capacity, effectively meet the region's growing air transport demand, and inject momentum into the socio-economic development, tourism recovery, and investment attractiveness of Lam Dong province and surrounding areas. It is worth noting that the airport's development plan has clearly outlined a long-term strategy: On June 23, 2024, the Ministry of Transport and the People's Committee of Lam Dong Province jointly announced its upgrade to an international airport; from 2021 to 2030, the existing Terminal 1 with an annual throughput of 2 million passengers will be retained, while a new Terminal 2 with an annual throughput of 3 million passengers will be built simultaneously; by 2050, Terminal 2 will be further expanded, increasing the airport's total annual passenger throughput to 7 million and its annual cargo and mail throughput to 30,000 tons, with sufficient land reserves reserved to meet future development needs.
