Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) recently disclosed that by the end of 2025, the total installed capacity of Vietnam's power system (excluding electricity imports) will reach approximately 87,600 MW, an increase of nearly 6,400 MW compared to 2024. In terms of installed capacity, Vietnam's power system ranks second in the ASEAN region.
Specifically, the power structure is as follows: renewable energy (wind power, solar power, biomass energy, etc.) will account for approximately 24,400 MW, or 27.9%; coal-fired power will account for nearly 28,100 MW, or 32.1%; and hydropower will account for 24,600 MW, or 28.1%.
Regarding investment and construction, in 2025, EVN and its subsidiaries, following the directives of the Vietnamese government, the Prime Minister, and various ministries, will focus on advancing key power source and grid projects, exceeding the annual investment plan for the second consecutive year – with a total investment of VND 125.77 trillion, representing a year-on-year increase of 14.7%. During this period, a number of large and important projects, including the expansion of the Heping Hydropower Station, the Lao Cai-Vung An 500 kV transmission line, the Con Dao power transmission line, and submarine cables, were successfully put into operation, and several new projects were launched simultaneously.
Notably, intergovernmental negotiations on the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 project made positive progress, with all parties continuing consultations on preliminary preparations, striving to commence construction of some parts of the project in 2026.
Significant achievements were made in the power grid construction sector: In 2025, EVN and its subsidiaries started 215 new power grid projects, put 260 110 kV to 500 kV power grid projects into operation, constructed approximately 3,900 kilometers of new transmission lines, and added approximately 27,000 MVA of substation capacity.
Despite facing numerous difficulties, in 2025, EVN units actively raised funds to advance electrification work in remote and impoverished areas, connecting more than 5,000 households in provinces such as Dien Bien, Tuyen Quang, Lai Chau, Son La, Kien Giang, and Quang Tri to electricity.
By the end of 2025, Vietnam will have achieved 100% electrification coverage in communes, with a residential electrification rate of 99.85%, including 99.77% in rural areas. (End)
