Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Recently, Hong Kong authorities arrested a 30-year-old Thai man for smuggling 187 parrot eggs, valued at approximately 6 million Thai baht, and sentenced him to two years in prison. Experts identified the smuggled parrot eggs as belonging to several endangered parrot species.

It is understood that the man has been formally charged under local law and was intercepted upon arrival at Hong Kong airport. A total of 188 bird eggs were found in his luggage, all but one of which were confirmed to belong to endangered parrot species. Sam Inglis, wildlife program manager at the environmental organization ADM Capital Foundation, stated that while the final destination of these eggs is unknown, they are typically kept in East Asia, Hong Kong, mainland China, and Taiwan, representing a new smuggling trend.

This is because adult parrot eggs of these species can fetch tens of thousands of Hong Kong dollars, and due to their ability to breed, the economic potential is even greater. Any violation of regulations regarding the import, export, or possession of endangered species specimens/samples is illegal and carries a maximum penalty of HK$10 million, or 10 years imprisonment, upon conviction.
