Myanmar repatriated a Russian citizen involved in online fraud; five Filipinos were detained for investigation.

  Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Myanmar authorities reported that a Russian citizen suspected of online fraud and related criminal activities has been repatriated according to law; five Filipino citizens have been detained after their identities were verified and are undergoing further verification and repatriation procedures.

  The Russian citizen illegally entered Myanmar via border routes through neighboring countries such as Thailand and participated in online gambling and telecommunications fraud activities in the Myawaddy-Shwekok region of Kayin State. Myanmar authorities, combining legal procedures with humanitarian principles, completed the handover through the Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Bridge II. Representatives from the Russian Embassy in Thailand and the Thai Immigration Bureau attended the handover ceremony, and relevant departments coordinated the entire process to ensure compliance and accuracy in the repatriation.

  In addition, during a special operation, the identities of five Filipinos who illegally entered the same region have been confirmed and they have been detained; repatriation reviews are underway.

  Statistical data shows that from January 30, 2025 to April 7, 2026, a total of 14,625 foreign citizens illegally entering Myanmar were detained in Myawaddy Township. Of these, 13,405 have been repatriated to Thailand in accordance with the law; of the remaining 1,220, 741 have been prosecuted under current immigration law, and 479 have been properly resettled and are awaiting repatriation.

  The Myanmar authorities stated that they will continue to cooperate with regional and international partners to severely crack down on online fraud crimes, handle those involved according to law, and assist high-risk foreign nationals and victims of human trafficking in their safe repatriation.
