Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – On October 31, it was learned from the China Earthquake Administration that the Earthquake Scientific Expedition Committee, initiated by China, has been formally established after being reviewed and approved by the Executive Committee of the International Association for Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI). This is the first professional committee initiated by China under the IASPEI framework, with Researcher Li Ying from the China Earthquake Administration serving as its first chairman.
IASPEI is a professional association under the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), dedicated to promoting research and development on the structure, properties, and processes of the Earth's interior. It is one of the most influential international scientific organizations in the field of earthquake research.
The Earthquake Scientific Expedition Committee will establish a multidisciplinary rapid response and scientific investigation platform for major earthquakes within the IASPEI framework. This will help deepen research on earthquake occurrence and disaster-causing mechanisms, promote international cooperation in earthquake disaster reduction, and enhance China's influence and leadership in the international field of earthquake disaster reduction.
It is reported that, in order to enhance China's influence in the international field of earthquake disaster reduction, promote global development with Chinese concepts, solutions, and technologies in earthquake disaster reduction, and contribute to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, the China Earthquake Administration formally proposed the establishment of an Earthquake Scientific Research Committee to IASPEI in July 2023. After more than two years of consultation and communication, it was incorporated into the IASPEI General Assembly resolution in early September 2025, and the resolution was reviewed and approved by the IASPEI Executive Committee at the end of September, officially establishing the Earthquake Scientific Research Committee.
Earthquake scientific research is an important way to understand the mechanism of earthquake occurrence, analyze the earthquake process, and identify disaster-causing factors. It is of great significance for judging post-earthquake trends, protecting the safety of emergency rescue personnel, and post-disaster reconstruction. For a long time, China has attached great importance to conducting investigations and research on earthquake disasters. The China Earthquake Administration has summarized more than 200 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or above, and its in-depth research on the nine major earthquakes that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s has had a significant impact both domestically and internationally.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the China Earthquake Administration has organized more than ten systematic scientific expeditions to deal with major destructive earthquakes both domestically and internationally. This has accumulated a wealth of scientific experience and data, deepened our understanding of earthquake mechanisms and disaster characteristics, and provided a scientific basis for post-earthquake rescue and reconstruction efforts. Consequently, a complete set of earthquake scientific research models, proven in practice and applicable to widespread implementation, has been developed. (End)
