Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – From January to April 2026, Luang Prabang, Laos, received over 824,000 tourists, further solidifying its position as a core tourist destination in Laos. While the number of tourists steadily increased, strengthening tourism support services and industry management became key issues for promoting high-quality development of the local tourism industry.
At a recent meeting on catering industry management, officials released detailed data: of the tourists visiting in the first four months, 253,175 were domestic tourists and 570,994 were international tourists, with international tourists accounting for nearly 70%. Sonephew Thammunghun, Deputy Director of the Luang Prabang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, pointed out that this growth trend fully demonstrates Luang Prabang's enduring appeal to both domestic and international tourists.
Currently, the city has 381 businesses providing catering, entertainment, and wellness services, including 148 restaurants, 17 entertainment venues, and 39 massage and spa centers, forming a comprehensive support service system for tourism development. During the meeting, relevant departments reviewed the implementation of the regulations on the management of catering establishments and approved a series of optimization measures, focusing on strengthening order maintenance and daily management in areas with high tourist density. Participants also discussed potential risks in the industry's development, clarifying the direction for prevention and rectification of issues such as drug smuggling, prostitution, theft, and price gouging that damage the tourist experience and affect the city's reputation.
The impressive start to the year gives Luang Prabang more confidence to achieve its annual targets. According to the plan, the province aims to receive over 2.3 million tourists in 2026 (522,270 domestic tourists and 1.78 million international tourists), striving to achieve tourism revenue of US$1.27 billion. As a core pillar of the province's economy, the long-term development blueprint for tourism has also been clarified: based on the 2025-2029 tourism development plan, the local government aims to receive 10 million tourists by 2029, including 6 million international tourists.
To ensure the goals are achieved, the local government is advancing several key initiatives: firstly, upgrading the infrastructure of core scenic areas such as Kuang Si Falls, Wat Xieng Thong, Phra Phuttha Phrom, Luang Prabang National Museum, and Tham Ting Cave; and secondly, comprehensively improving the service standards and hospitality capacity of the hotel industry.
