Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – Cambodia plans to host an international half marathon on Koh Rong Island in Sihanoukville Province in 2027. The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) has assembled an expert team to conduct an on-site assessment, focusing on road and transportation infrastructure. The aim is to attract global tourists through this international sporting event and further revitalize the coastal tourism economy.

NOCC Secretary General Vuoch Chhum Nam recently revealed that Koh Rong Island, with its stunning natural scenery and pristine beaches, has become a popular international resort destination. This site assessment was conducted at the formal invitation of Sihanoukville Governor Mun Senath to ensure the scientific and rigorous preparation for the event. He stated that the number of foreign tourists visiting Koh Rong Island continues to rise, and many long-term residents have good exercise habits and meet the physical fitness standards required for the 21km half marathon and 10km accompanying course, laying a solid foundation for participation.

It is understood that the event is initially planned to be held during the dry season, but the specific date has not yet been determined. This year, the expert team's inspection will focus on core aspects such as technical route planning, venue entrance and exit layout, and transportation convenience. They will also conduct in-depth discussions on the feasibility of opening direct flights to further enhance the event's international accessibility. It's worth noting that the Sihanoukville Provincial Government successfully hosted a large-scale obstacle course race on Koh Rong in October 2025, attracting thousands of participants, providing valuable experience for organizing this international marathon.

Voc Chhrom emphasized that Koh Rong is a pristine island that has not been overdeveloped, with a purity far exceeding many international coastal scenic spots. This international half marathon, as the first large-scale international sporting event in Koh Rong's history, will not only fully showcase its unique natural charm but also help the island transform into a regional tourism and commercial center. The event will be open to running enthusiasts worldwide and is expected to attract a large number of local and international participants, potentially becoming another important calling card for Cambodia to enhance its international tourism image.
