The Twin Towers, located in a 6,000-square-meter courtyard in the heart of Quy Nhon City, are an ideal place for tourists to visit. They are one of the eight remaining Cham tower complexes in Binh Dinh Province and a significant example of Cham cultural architecture with strong religious overtones.
According to records held by the Twin Towers Relics Management Office, the Twin Towers also have another name: Hung Thanh Towers, and their date back to the late 12th to early 13th centuries. These are religious buildings from the ancient Champa Kingdom, called "kalan" in Champa, meaning tomb, built by the king to enshrine deities. These deities might be Shiva, Ganesha (the elephant-bodied god), or various Buddhas, depending on each king's beliefs. Because royal and divine authority were intertwined in ancient Champa, many towers also enshrined the Champa king.
The complex consists of two towers, the larger one approximately 25 meters high and the smaller one 23 meters high, both facing south. The towers were built with fired bricks, bound together seamlessly with a special adhesive—a unique building material of the Champa people, whose secrets remain unsolved.
The larger tower is more symmetrical, with meticulously crafted main sections and a top, resulting in a more compact layout. Symmetrical patterns adorn both sides, and 21 exquisitely sculpted dancing women surround the top, lifelike in their detail. Between the top and the body of the tower are statues of meditating monks, flanked by symmetrical elephants. The meticulous detail of the Cham people truly reveals the rich cultural heritage of this site.
The smaller tower's structure is similar to the larger tower, but instead of dancer statues, its top is decorated with 13 lifelike deer sculptures, each unique in shape.
Today, the twin towers increasingly attract domestic and international tourists, not only because of the Cham people's unique and exquisite architecture, but also because they leave a distinctive cultural impression. The Cham girls' dances have been restored, providing visitors with a feast for the eyes.
