Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) On January 7, 2026, as Cambodia celebrated the 47th anniversary of "Victory Day," Cambodian Senate President and CPP Chairman Hun Sen delivered a special address. The address comprehensively reviewed the country's development achievements, solemnly reiterated the principled stance on border sovereignty, and called on the entire nation to unite in safeguarding national peace and justice.
Prince Hun Sen first reviewed the significant historical importance of the overthrow of the Pol Pot genocidal regime on January 7, 1979. He pointed out that this victory ended the nation's suffering, laid a solid foundation for Cambodia's reconstruction and development, and propelled the country towards peace, democracy, and prosperity. The Prince emphasized that in the past year, even facing a complex international situation and global economic uncertainties, Cambodia has made significant progress in national development.
Regarding the recent border situation, Prince Hun Sen issued a strong statement. He explicitly pointed out that Thailand's recent military attack on Cambodia's border region under the pretext of "maintaining security and sovereignty" seriously violated Cambodia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and blatantly contravened the UN Charter, the ASEAN Charter, and relevant international humanitarian law.
Hun Sen stated that despite provocations, the Cambodian government has maintained a high degree of restraint, insisting on resolving border disputes through diplomatic and peaceful means, and earnestly implementing the ceasefire agreement reached on July 28, 2025, and the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration signed on October 26. However, due to Thailand's failure to comply with the relevant agreements and its continued escalation of military operations, the border situation escalated again. With the active mediation of the international community, the two sides reached another ceasefire agreement on December 27, 2025. Cambodia reiterated its commitment to continuing dialogue to end the state of hostility and restore lasting peace to the border.
On behalf of the Cambodian government, Prince Hun Sen expressed sincere gratitude to the international community for its support and mediation during the crisis, specifically thanking China, the United States, and Malaysia. He emphasized that Cambodia's primary goal is to safeguard the lives and property of its people and achieve long-term stability in border areas, and to this end, it will continue to fully implement all ceasefire agreements.
In his concluding remarks, Prince Hun Sen called upon the entire nation to continue to unite closely under the principles of "Nation, Religion, and King," and to uphold a high degree of patriotism and self-reliance. He highly praised the spirit of solidarity shown by Cambodian compatriots at home and abroad in supporting frontline troops and resettling displaced persons, and stressed: "Unity is strength, unity is victory. No external force can destroy our will to defend our homeland."
This address not only demonstrated Cambodia's firm resolve to safeguard national sovereignty but also sent a positive signal to the international community of its commitment to peaceful development, further consolidating the consensus and strength of the entire nation.
