Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Colonel Julian A.L. Smith, the newly appointed British Defense Attaché to Cambodia, met with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Tea Seiha on November 20.

During the meeting, Colonel Smith first expressed his deepest condolences for the Cambodian soldiers and civilians who tragically lost their lives in the recent border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand. He highly praised Cambodia's restraint and peaceful approach in handling the border issue.

Colonel Smith emphasized that the UK consistently supports actions that adhere to international law and principles of justice, and stated that the UK will make every effort to assist Cambodia and Thailand in resuming peaceful dialogue. He called on Thailand to release the 18 Cambodian soldiers currently detained as a gesture of goodwill.

Minister Tea Seiha pointed out during the meeting that the Cambodian Ministry of National Defense has always valued developing bilateral relations, but also believes that multilateral mechanisms are more conducive to a transparent and fair resolution of border issues.

Minister Tea Seiha revealed that Cambodia is currently actively assisting the counter-terrorism team in conducting on-site investigations in the border region. He emphasized, "We have nothing to hide, and we welcome more international friends to come and understand the facts." Cambodia's move aims to increase transparency and garner international understanding and support.

Minister Tee Sihah further stated that the key to the current situation lies in implementing the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement and the spirit of the Joint Border Committee's solidarity meeting. He indicated that if both sides, especially Thailand, can effectively implement these two agreements, it will greatly help ease border tensions, rebuild mutual trust, and promote a positive overall situation.

Colonel Smith expressed his eager anticipation for his new term in Cambodia during the meeting.

In addition, he mentioned that two Cambodian officers are currently studying at the prestigious Royal Military Academy St Heath in the UK, including the grandson of Prince Hun Sen. This information reflects the ongoing cooperation between the UK and Cambodia in military education and personnel training.

The meeting concluded in a friendly and pragmatic atmosphere, with both sides agreeing to maintain communication and work together for regional peace and stability.
