Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Ban Boona, Chairman of the Spokesperson's Office of the Cambodian Government, recently issued a statement expressing strong concern over the recent words and actions of Thailand, pointing out that its behavior clearly contradicts the spirit and content of the Kuala Lumpur Joint Statement and seriously undermines the efforts of both countries to resolve the dispute peacefully.
Thailand's Words and Actions Violate Commitments and Damage Efforts to Peacefully Resolve the Issue
Chairman Ban Boona pointed out that Thai civilian and military leaders have made a series of statements inconsistent with the consensus reached in the Joint Statement. Even worse, Thailand, citing the consensus reached in the statement, has proposed additional conditions for the release of 18 detained Cambodian soldiers and has even openly warned of the possibility of using force to seize the Ta Phetchabun temple in Cambodia.
He emphasized that these irresponsible words and actions not only seriously violate the spirit of the Joint Statement but also exacerbate tensions between the two countries and weaken the international community's confidence in a peaceful resolution of the dispute between Cambodia and Thailand.
Contradictory Promises and Actions: Failure to Fulfill Soldier Release Agreement
According to Part IV of the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration, both sides explicitly agreed to avoid spreading unverified false information, accusations, and statements, and to refrain from making harmful remarks through official or informal channels, in order to ease tensions, reduce negative public sentiment, and create an environment conducive to peaceful dialogue.
However, President Ban Boonak pointed out that Thailand's actions blatantly contradict its promises. As of November 5th, Thailand had delayed for 10 days and had still not released the 18 detained Cambodian soldiers, clearly demonstrating that Thailand had not fulfilled the agreement.
Cambodia Strongly Urges Immediate Damage Control and Strict Compliance
The Cambodian government's spokesperson agency strongly urged Thailand to respect and strictly implement all commitments in the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration, urging it to refrain from making any statements that could escalate the situation, immediately cease imposing new conditions, and immediately release all detained Cambodian soldiers.
It is noteworthy that President Ban Boonak, in his statement released on the evening of November 5th, also mentioned the positive progress made since the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement.
Witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Cambodia and Thailand agreed to withdraw weapons and weapons of mass destruction from the border region in phases, starting November 1st, injecting new momentum into the peace process between the two countries.
The Kuala Lumpur Joint Statement is an important document signed by Cambodia and Thailand after the border conflict, under the mediation of the international community, in order to achieve lasting peace and stability. Its core objectives are to promote military de-escalation, restore mutual trust, and rebuild normal order in the border region.
