Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Cambodian Ministry of Interior spokesperson General Khieu Sopha recently stated that Cambodian authorities are taking comprehensive action, including handling complaints, conducting in-depth investigations, and implementing strong law enforcement measures, to resolutely combat cross-border online fraud.
General Khieu Sopha welcomed the strengthened cooperation between Cambodia and other countries such as Singapore in jointly combating cyber and technology crime. He emphasized that online fraud is a transnational problem that requires a coordinated international response.
“We cannot simply blame Cambodia. We must work together to effectively combat online fraud,” General Khieu Sopha pointed out. “The Cambodian government absolutely does not support such crimes because they damage the country’s image. When problems arise, our authorities will do everything in their power to rectify them and restore Cambodia’s reputation.” The spokesperson added that Cambodian authorities are taking proactive measures and close international cooperation to continuously and resolutely combat online fraud. Recent law enforcement actions have yielded significant results.
According to a report released on October 15 by the Cambodian National Committee for Combating Cyber Fraud, from June 27 to October 14, authorities arrested 3,455 foreigners suspected of involvement in online fraud in Phnom Penh and 17 provinces. Of these, 75 suspected ringleaders and accomplices have been transferred to court for trial. Cambodia is actively deepening regional and global cooperation to more effectively address the challenges of transnational cybercrime.
Previously, Singaporean media reported that Singaporean police arrested 34 people (27 Singaporean citizens and 7 Malaysian citizens) linked to a fraud ring operating in Cambodia. The report stated that these suspects were members of a transnational online fraud network based in Cambodia. Cambodia welcomes and supports cooperation with Singapore.
As a manifestation of deepening regional cooperation, Prime Minister Hun Manet and the President of South Korea reached an agreement on October 27 to establish a Cambodia-South Korea joint working group next month to strengthen the fight against cybercrime and other illegal activities involving South Korean citizens in Cambodia.
After learning that victims in the United States had lost over $10 billion due to regional fraud, Cambodia has agreed to strengthen cooperation with the United States to combat drug trafficking and online financial fraud.
The Cambodian government reiterated its "zero tolerance" policy towards online fraud and its continued commitment to working with international partners to build a safe online environment.
