Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced on the 7th that Indonesia will achieve food self-sufficiency by 2025, with self-sufficiency in staple foods such as rice.

Prabowo stated this on the same day at a national harvest celebration in Karawang, West Java province. He added that Indonesia no longer needs to import rice and is no longer dependent on food supplies from other countries. He symbolically announced Indonesia's achievement of food self-sufficiency by using a traditional rice-pounding ceremony. The Indonesian Minister of Agriculture, the Coordinating Minister for Food, and representatives of farmers attended the ceremony.

Indonesia is Southeast Asia's largest economy and the world's fourth most populous country. For a long time, it relied on rice imports to stabilize domestic prices, and rice is its staple food. In October 2024, Prabowo proposed promoting food self-sufficiency in his inaugural address.

Prabowo pointed out that food self-sufficiency is not only an economic issue but also has profound strategic significance, representing a crucial milestone for national independence and long-term development. The facts prove that Indonesia is fully capable of ensuring food security through its own efforts.

Indonesia's agricultural ministry stated that, with the achievement of its food self-sufficiency goal, the government has decided to cancel the 2026 rice import plan and will promote self-sufficiency in crops such as corn and cassava, as well as important agricultural products like garlic.

Indonesian media believe that Indonesia's announcement of achieving food self-sufficiency marks a significant step forward in ensuring food security and promoting agricultural development. (End)
