The U.S. Southern Command posted on social media that on December 17th, under the direction of U.S. Secretary of Defense Hergsays, the "Southern Spear" joint task force conducted an operation in international waters against a vessel "identified as a terrorist organization."

The U.S. Southern Command indicated that intelligence suggested the vessel was sailing along a known drug trafficking route in the Eastern Pacific and was involved in drug trafficking activities. Four male "drug-trafficking terrorists" were killed; no U.S. personnel were injured.

The U.S. military did not provide any evidence that the vessel was involved in drug trafficking.

AFP noted that since the U.S. military's operations against alleged "drug-trafficking ships" in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific in early September, this operation has brought the total number of deaths to 99.
