Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – The United Nations General Assembly held its first meeting on the “International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures” on April 4th. Sun Lei, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, spoke at the meeting, calling on a few Western countries to immediately, unconditionally, and completely abolish unilateral coercive measures.
Sun Lei stated that unilateralism is currently rampant, and unilateral coercive measures are prevalent. These measures seriously violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, severely undermine the basic norms of international law and the foundation of the rule of law, seriously infringe upon fundamental human rights such as the right to life and the right to development, seriously hinder the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and seriously impact multilateralism, the international order, and the global governance system. However, this problem has not been effectively curbed, and many developing countries and their people are suffering greatly.
Sun Lei noted that opposing unilateral coercive measures has been a long-standing appeal of the international community, particularly the Global South, and the UN General Assembly has adopted more than 100 resolutions on this issue over the past few decades. China calls on a few Western countries to heed the call of justice and immediately, unconditionally, and completely abolish unilateral coercive measures. China also calls on member states, the UN system, and other international organizations to jointly resist this illegal act and help sanctioned countries alleviate their difficulties. On the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, China calls on the international community to take the opportunity of commemorating the "International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures" to maintain a clear understanding of the serious harm caused by unilateral coercive measures and to gather strong synergy for practicing genuine multilateralism and upholding international fairness and justice.
Sun Lei stated that as an important member of the Global South and a victim of unilateral coercive measures, China will be guided by global governance initiatives and work with all relevant parties to jointly oppose and resist unilateral coercive measures and all hegemonic, bullying, and domineering acts, safeguard the international system with the UN at its core and the international order based on international law, promote global governance in a more just and reasonable direction, and make greater contributions to world peace and development.
On June 16 this year, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution after debating the issue of unilateral coercive measures, declaring December 4th of each year as the "International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures." The resolution chose December 4 as the "International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures" because the Declaration on the Right to Development was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 4, 1986.
