Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – According to Myanmar's *Global New Light of Myanmar*, salt officials in the Ayeyarwady Region revealed that the region is expected to produce 170,000 tons of dried salt for the 2025-2026 salt season.
Production permits have been issued for over 19,320 acres of salt fields this season. Preparations for the salt fields began last October, and the first batch of salt was harvested in January of this year.
The Ayeyarwady Region salt officials stated that salt production is highly dependent on favorable weather. Due to the predicted early arrival of the monsoon this season, the production target is estimated at 170,000 tons. The increased number of salt farmers this season compared to last year may offset some of the production risks.
The official explained that in years with higher temperatures, the local dried salt production can reach up to 200,000 tons. Due to current weather conditions, this season's production target has been lowered accordingly.
Currently, local salt production is facing certain limitations. According to businesses, the salt fields are being affected by a cold snap. Some enterprises started production early to speed up the process, using fresh water in the salt pan preparation stage. This, coupled with persistently low temperatures in the mornings and evenings and insufficient sunshine, prevented salt crystals from forming as scheduled.
The main sun-dried salt production areas in the Ayeyarwady Region are Pyapon, Labuta, and Ngaputo townships. Peak production typically occurs from the second week of March to the first week of May each year. (End)
