Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – On December 19th, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a five-year work summary meeting in Hanoi regarding the implementation plan of the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Normal Migration (GCM). The meeting was chaired by Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang.

In her opening remarks, Le Thi Thu Hang stated that migrants have made positive contributions to Vietnam's socio-economic development during the process of reform and integration into the international community. Vietnam consistently adheres to a people-centered approach, prioritizing the safety and legal rights of migrants in its policy formulation and implementation.

Le Thi Thu Hang noted that international migration is currently facing many new and more complex challenges, especially against the backdrop of unpredictable regional and international situations; cybercrime, online fraud, and human trafficking for the purpose of forced crimes are on the rise. In response to this reality, more adaptive and creative measures are needed, based on strengthened inter-sectoral coordination and broad international cooperation, to reduce harm to migrants and effectively address related issues.

She suggested that delegates conduct a comprehensive and objective assessment of the achievements of the Global Compact implementation plan over the past five years; and propose strategic priorities for the next phase, integrating them with the implementation of the Politburo's pillar resolutions, the resolutions of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the Sustainable Development Goals, digital transformation, building a socialist rule-of-law state, and deepening international integration.

Delegates unanimously praised the positive changes brought about by the implementation of the plan in promoting safe and orderly migration; preventing illegal immigration and transnational human trafficking; and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of migrants.

The head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) delegation, speaking at the meeting, highly commended Vietnam's efforts and suggested that Vietnam consider registering as a "leading country" in implementing the Global Compact at the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), scheduled to be held in New York, USA, in May 2026.

In her concluding remarks, Le Thi Thu Hang emphasized the need for strengthened coordination among Vietnamese ministries, sectors, and localities to improve policies and regulations; establish a migrant database; enhance the quality of international cooperation; protect vulnerable groups; prevent illegal immigration and human trafficking; strengthen information sharing on citizen protection; and innovate migrant outreach efforts.
