Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group, a leading Vietnamese agricultural enterprise, is accelerating its expansion in the regional agricultural sector. It recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Champasak Province, Laos, planning to invest US$50 million to build a 5,000-hectare high-quality coffee plantation and processing base on the Bolaven Plateau, promoting the development of Laos' coffee industry towards large-scale, high-value-added operations.
The signing ceremony was held on Sunday in Gia Lai Province, Vietnam, and was witnessed by provincial leaders from both Vietnam and Laos, the Lao Consul General in Da Nang, and Alounxay Sounnalath, Secretary of the Champasak Provincial Party Committee. According to the agreement, the Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group, chaired by Doan Nguyen Duc, will leverage the fertile soil and suitable climate of the Bora Vinh Plateau to create a large-scale industrial base integrating planting and processing. The high-quality coffee beans produced will primarily target the international export market, while modern agricultural technologies and value-added processing techniques will be introduced to help upgrade local agricultural technology.
In his address, Arunxay Sunarat, Secretary of the Champasak Provincial Party Committee, stated that the provincial government will coordinate with relevant departments to provide comprehensive support for the project's implementation, promoting the development of high-tech agriculture in Champasak Province. He emphasized that the project will not only create numerous jobs and improve agricultural productivity but also inject strong momentum into the region's socio-economic development.
Gia Lai Provincial Deputy Governor Nguyen Huu Quy pointed out that Gia Lai and Champasak provinces have already established extensive cooperation in multiple fields. This coffee planting and processing base project will further deepen the friendly cooperative relationship between the two provinces, becoming a new model of local cooperation between Vietnam and Laos. According to Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group, this project is a key component of its regional expansion strategy. The group plans to expand its plantations to over 20,000 hectares across Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, aiming to become a leading regional and globally competitive agricultural enterprise.
As one of Vietnam's largest agricultural product processing companies, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group was one of the earliest Vietnamese investors to establish a presence in Southeast Asian agriculture. It has already invested in the cultivation of tropical fruits such as bananas, jackfruit, mangoes, and durians in Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, accumulating rich experience in cross-border agricultural operations.
This investment aligns with Laos's coffee industry development plan. According to Mr. Vithong Sitthimolatta, a representative from the Lao Ministry of Industry and Commerce, at the 2026 Vientiane Coffee Festival, coffee is one of Laos's core agricultural export categories, generating over US$200 million annually and providing employment opportunities for 25,000 families nationwide, making it a significant source of rural income. Over the past decade, the Lao government has continuously promoted the improvement of coffee production capacity, quality, and market expansion. In addition to the traditional main producing area of the Boeung Veng Plateau, coffee cultivation in the northern provinces of Phongsaly, Houaphan, and Xieng Khouang has also reached a considerable scale and gained market recognition. The arrival of the Hoang Eng Gia Lai Group will provide important support for the improvement of Laos' coffee industry chain and the enhancement of its export competitiveness.
