Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Laos and Japan, Princess Aiko of Japan began her first official visit to Laos this week. This is the first visit by a member of the Japanese Imperial Family to Laos in 13 years, and the fifth such visit overall, marking a historic chapter in bilateral relations.

Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith warmly received Princess Aiko, stating that this visit is a historic moment in the long-standing friendship between the two countries and reflects Japan's high regard for bilateral relations. He used the cherry blossom trees in the Lao-Japanese Friendship Park in Houaphan Province and the four elephants donated by Laos to the Kyoto Zoo as examples to symbolize the flourishing friendship between the two nations, and expressed gratitude for Japan's continued support for Laos' socio-economic development.

Prior to the visit, Lao Vice President Pany Yathothu also welcomed the princess, emphasizing that choosing Laos as the first destination for her overseas trip demonstrates the deep mutual trust between the two countries. Princess Aiko then met with Prime Minister Somxay Siphandone, congratulating him on receiving the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun (First Class) and thanking him for his contributions to bilateral relations. Prime Minister Somxay praised the contributions of Japanese volunteers over the past 60 years and expressed his hope to expand cooperation within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership.

Princess Aiko conveyed greetings from Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, stating that it was an honor to visit Laos in this special year and reiterating Japan's commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the current comprehensive strategic partnership and looked forward to deepening cooperation in areas such as culture and youth exchanges. That evening, Laos hosted the princess and her delegation with a traditional bhachi ceremony and banquet.

During her visit, Princess Aiko will visit the COPE Visitor Center to learn about the impact of unexploded ordnance left over from the Indochina War and meet with relevant staff and survivors. Laos suffered extensive bombing, and many unexploded ordnance still threaten the safety of its people.

Afterwards, the princess will travel to Luang Prabang to visit the National Museum and meet with provincial leaders. Before departing on November 22, she will also meet with Japanese citizens residing in Laos and Lao people with close ties to Japan, further strengthening the bond between the two peoples.
