Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Laos has signed the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime alongside 63 other countries, including the European Union. This move demonstrates Laos' firm resolve to work with the international community to combat growing cyber threats.

Laotian President Thongloun Sisoulith witnessed the signing of the convention and led the Laotian delegation to a high-level meeting held in Hanoi, Vietnam last weekend. A press release from the Laotian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security General Vilay Lakhamvong completed the signing on behalf of the Lao government.

The signing ceremony was co-chaired by Vietnamese President Luong Cuong and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and attended by representatives from over 110 countries. In his speech, President Luong Cuong emphasized the significance of the UN Convention against Cybercrime, stating that it embodies the shared vision and solidarity of UN member states in building a secure, stable, and sustainable cyberspace. In his speech, General Vilay Lakhamvong highly praised Vietnam's active role since the drafting of the Convention in 2019 and thanked Vietnam for hosting this landmark signing ceremony. He stated that the Convention will provide a crucial international legal framework for the global fight against cybercrime.

Laos' active participation in the Convention signing and high-level meetings fully demonstrates its political commitment to building a solid legal foundation to ensure that information and communications technologies (ICTs) can effectively safeguard national security and the well-being of its people while promoting economic, trade, investment, and tourism development.

This move will also strongly support Laos' digital transformation agenda by fostering a secure and trusted digital environment. Digital transformation is one of Laos' national development priorities and is crucial for promoting socioeconomic growth and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

By joining the Convention, Laos will have a crucial legislative foundation for drafting new laws and revising existing ones to align them with regional and international cooperation frameworks, thereby better protecting the legitimate rights and interests of its citizens from cyber threats.

While in Hanoi, President Thongloun Sisoulith, who is also General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, also met with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Surin. The two sides held in-depth discussions on further strengthening the traditional friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the two parties, two countries, and two peoples.

In addition, the Laotian delegation held bilateral talks with delegations from other countries participating in the signing of the convention, exchanging experiences and best practices in cybersecurity management.
