Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – Luang Prabang, a World Heritage city, has achieved significant success in sustainable tourism development, winning the 2025 Green Destinations 100 Story Award. In the “Destination Management” category, Luang Prabang ranked third, an award recognizing its successful experiences and inclusive practices in destination development, visitor management, and crisis recovery.

The award was officially presented at ITB Berlin 2025, the world's leading travel trade fair, held in Germany from March 4th to 6th. This honor is a high recognition of the Luang Prabang authorities' long-term commitment to protecting World Heritage and promoting sustainable tourism development. Previously, Luang Prabang was selected as one of the “100 Sustainable Destinations” by Green Destinations at the Green Destinations Conference held in Chile last year, and this latest award further solidifies its position in the global sustainable tourism field.

The Luang Prabang Provincial Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism stated that Luang Prabang is the first tourist destination among Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam to receive this honor. Dr. Soudaphone Khomthavong, head of the department, pointed out that this year the department will focus on improving the conditions and indicators required for Luang Prabang to apply for Green Destination certification from Green Tourism Organization. Green Tourism Organization is a global leader in sustainable development certification for tourist destinations and business operators and is certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Dr. Soudaphone explained that the certification covers six criteria, including tourist destination management, nature and scenery, environment and climate, culture, social well-being, and business and communication.

Luang Prabang's tourist appeal is already world-renowned. In 2023, Time magazine recommended Luang Prabang province as one of the 50 places to visit, praising it as a "hidden paradise" and specifically mentioning highlights such as turquoise waterfalls, Buddhist temples, and sunset cruises on the Mekong River. As one of Laos' most famous provinces, Luang Prabang is a top tourist destination thanks to its unique riverside location, ancient temples, quaint streets and alleys, vibrant festivals, and beautiful scenery. In 1995, the town's old town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Besides the old town, the capital and its surrounding areas boast numerous popular attractions, such as the Phu Si Pagoda, Sae Waterfall, Kuangxi Waterfall, and the large night market in the city center, drawing tourists from all over the world. With the continuous development of tourism, Luang Prabang's exploration and efforts on sustainable development have not only brought honor to the local area but also provided valuable experience for the sustainable development of global tourist destinations.
