Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – On February 26, 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony for the China-Laos 500 kW power transmission line project was held in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Lao Prime Minister Somxay Siphandone, Minister of Energy and Mines Phoxay Sayasone, Chinese Ambassador to Laos Fang Hong, and relevant parties from both China and Laos attended the ceremony.
Minister of Energy and Mines Phoxay Sayasone stated that the international power transmission system will connect Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and China, enabling Laos to engage in energy trade and exchange with foreign countries. The 500 kV Laos-China power grid interconnection project is of great importance, being a strategic energy industry development project proposed in Laos's Five-Year Energy and Mineral Development Plan (2021-2025). It will create conditions for the realization of the economic potential of Laos and southern provinces of China, particularly for the systematic and sustainable development of energy integration and exchange.
Chinese Ambassador to Laos Fang Hong stated that the project reflects the shared goals of both sides in connectivity, cooperative development, and benefiting the people. This project will help integrate the energy resources of both countries, improve regional energy allocation, strengthen the development of Laos' clean energy resources, and build a pattern of solidarity, cooperation, and mutual benefit.
The 500 kW China-Laos power grid interconnection project is a strategic project included in the "China-Laos Community with a Shared Future" action plan. It is scheduled to be completed and put into operation in 2026. At that time, the power exchange capacity between Laos and China is expected to reach 1500 MW, with a clean energy transmission capacity of approximately 3 billion kilowatt-hours. This will help strengthen Laos-China energy cooperation in a broader sense.
