Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – On the evening of December 30th, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired the 28th meeting of the National Steering Committee for Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing at the government residence. The meeting was held via video link with 22 coastal provinces and cities.
To implement the tasks assigned by the Prime Minister at the 27th meeting of the Steering Committee, the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has improved its progress report on combating IUU fishing and sustainable fisheries development; and established a management database covering 18,024 vessels, including deregistered vessels and fishing vessels with a high risk of IUU violations. Notably, in the past week, relevant departments continued to closely monitor fishing vessels, and no new vessels were found violating foreign waters.
In his concluding remarks at the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that significant progress has been made in combating IUU fishing activities. He demanded that all ministries and localities continue to earnestly and seriously implement the instructions, conclusions, and guidelines issued by the Secretariat, the Government, and the Prime Minister regarding the crackdown on IUU fishing, in order to achieve the "dual objectives": both to lift the European Commission's (EC) "yellow card" warning and to promote the sustainable development of Vietnam's fisheries by vigorously transitioning from fishing to aquaculture.
Pham Minh Chinh pointed out that the key task for the next week is to thoroughly address all tasks, ensuring reports are truthful and objective, avoiding formalism and the pursuit of quick results. At the same time, he stressed the importance of standardizing data across all levels, departments, and localities regarding the issues raised by the European Commission.
He requested that ministries continue to strictly enforce the regular reporting system for the crackdown on IUU fishing; ministries, associations, and localities continue to inspect the crackdown on IUU fishing in their respective areas, thoroughly handle violations, conduct patrols and monitoring in waters near neighboring countries, closely monitor the entry and exit of fishing vessels, resolutely prohibit ineligible fishing vessels from leaving port, and intensify public awareness campaigns regarding the crackdown on IUU fishing activities.
