
According to data from the Philippine Department of Agriculture, the country's total rice imports reached 2.8 million tons from January to August 2024, a 19% increase from 2.3 million tons in the same period of 2023.
The Philippine Botanical Bureau (BPI), a branch of the Department of Agriculture, stated in its latest report that rice imports increased from 167,403 tons in July 2024 to 296,350 tons in August. However, these figures are still lower than the monthly average of 400,000 tons in previous months.
Vietnam remains the Philippines' largest food supplier, with shipments exceeding 2.17 million tons, accounting for approximately 77% of the Southeast Asian country's total imports from January to August 2024. Thailand, Pakistan, and Myanmar followed.
In 2023, the Philippines imported 3.6 million tons of rice, a 5.9% decrease from the record 3.82 million tons in 2022. The Department of Agriculture expects rice imports in 2024 to be no higher than last year's levels.
*Myanmar Rice Exports Earn $353 Million
Data from the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF) shows that in the first five months of the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the country exported 718,281 tons of rice and broken rice.
According to the MRF report, Myanmar earned $353 million from rice exports. The country exported rice and broken rice to more than 30 countries via sea and land, including Indonesia, China, the Philippines, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
*China Remains Cambodia's Main Rice Export Market
The Cambodian Rice Federation recently revealed that in the first eight months of 2024, the country exported 412,023 tons of rice to 65 countries and regions, with an export value of $305 million. China remains one of the main export markets, with exports of 77,792 tons and an export value of nearly $48.9 million. (End)
