Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) - In March 2026, the Lao National Explosive Ordnance Disposal Project field team visited Ban Bak and Ban Klonthasin villages in Kalen district, Saikong province, to conduct explosive ordnance type verification and disposal work. Previously, local villagers reported to relevant departments that due to erosion of the Saikong River banks, nine large explosive devices were exposed in the riverbed, posing a serious safety hazard.
On-site technical investigation confirmed that the nine explosive devices included seven MK82 bombs (each weighing 500 pounds, approximately 226.7 kg) and two MK81 bombs (each weighing 250 pounds, approximately 113.3 kg), all of which were abandoned explosive devices.
To eliminate the safety risks, the field team used boats as transport and strictly followed explosive ordnance disposal technical specifications to gradually transfer these hazardous materials to a safe area. The destruction operation officially began on March 5 and is expected to last for 5 days. The safe destruction of all explosives will be completed on March 9, effectively protecting the lives and property of the surrounding villagers.
