They are gracefully flying under the guidance of their mothers.
March to May is the peak breeding season for grey herons, summer migratory birds in the Poyang Lake area. Currently, the first batch of hatched herons has officially entered the flight-learning stage.
At the Grey Heron Breeding and Conservation Base in Dazizui Village, Sushan Township, Duchang County, over ten thousand grey herons inhabit the area. Some stand quietly, some play and frolic, and some begin to learn to fly, their calls echoing throughout the forest.
During the flight-learning stage, under the guidance of adult herons, the young herons hop and flap their wings on branches near the nest, practicing basic flight maneuvers. As time goes on, the chicks' flying ability gradually improves, eventually enabling them to fly independently.
Dazizui Village, Sushan Township, Duchang County, is located in the core area of Poyang Lake, surrounded by water on three sides, providing an excellent habitat and breeding ground for egrets. Since the 1990s, grey herons have been arriving annually to breed here.
The villagers have always regarded grey herons as auspicious birds that bring them happiness. They have established a bird protection patrol team to carefully protect their habitat. "Humans and egrets living together in one village" has become a harmonious natural landscape, and the village has become a well-known "Grey Heron Village" in the area.
Poyang Lake is China's largest freshwater lake, an internationally important wetland, and Asia's largest wintering habitat for migratory birds. Duchang County, described by the Song Dynasty literary giant Su Dongpo as "on Poyang Lake," possesses one-third of the lake's water area. (End)
