Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – Following the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) which charted the course for the country's new stage of development, Le Quang Tung, Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee and head of the Can Tho delegation to the Congress, clarified the city's development goals and path to 2030 in a media interview.

Can Tho City has set its sights on becoming a national growth engine by 2030, playing a leading role in radiating influence across the Mekong Delta region. This goal was adopted by the first Can Tho City Party Congress and is also a clear requirement from the Central Committee of Vietnam for the city. Since merging with Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces on July 1, 2025, the city has consistently adhered to this positioning as a "regional development engine," facing both development opportunities and numerous challenges.

Le Quang Tung stated that Can Tho City's development has received the care and support of the Central Committee and various ministries. The merger has significantly expanded the city's development space, generating numerous new potentials and opportunities, laying the foundation for entering a new stage of development. Meanwhile, the city still faces shortcomings: several core indicators for a centrally administered municipality have not yet met targets; agriculture accounts for a relatively high proportion of its economy; and efforts in social security and poverty reduction need to be strengthened. Although its output of grain, agricultural products, and aquatic products ranks second in the country, sustained efforts are still needed to achieve its high growth target.

To play a leading role, Can Tho City has identified several key tasks: In the economic sphere, it aims to ensure an average annual growth rate of 10%-10.5% by 2030, while simultaneously improving the material and spiritual living standards of its residents, with a focus on the disadvantaged areas following the merger and impoverished villages inhabited by the Khmer people, and strengthening social security; in the social services sphere, it strives to build a high-quality human resources education and training center and a specialized medical center for the Mekong Delta region, and improve the medical system to meet regional needs; in the cultural sphere, it aims to become a cultural symbol hub for the southwest region and a regional festival city; in the science and technology sphere, it will leverage innovation, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence to build a regional innovation center and data center to support regional development.

Furthermore, leveraging the unique resources of its southwestern water towns, Can Tho City has identified tourism as a pillar industry until 2030, focusing on addressing the current issue of a lack of diverse tourism products and deeply exploring the cultural value of its water towns to inject new momentum into building a national growth pole and leading regional development.
