Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) On February 3, 2026, the First Intermediate People's Court of Hainan Province publicly announced its first-instance verdict in the bribery case of Li Weiwei, former Vice Chairman of the Population, Resources and Environment Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Li Weiwei was sentenced to life imprisonment for bribery, deprived of her political rights for life, and all her personal property was confiscated. The proceeds of her bribery and any interest accrued were ordered to be turned over to the national treasury, with further recovery to be pursued.
The court found that from 2008 to 2024, Li Weiwei, taking advantage of her positions as a member of the Standing Committee of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee, Minister of the United Front Work Department, member of the Standing Committee of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee, Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission, Secretary of the Party Group and Chairman of the Hunan Provincial CPPCC, and Vice Chairman of the Population, Resources and Environment Committee of the 14th National Committee of the CPPCC, provided assistance to others in matters such as project contracting, business operations, and administrative approvals, directly or through others, illegally accepting bribes totaling over RMB 117 million.
The First Intermediate People's Court of Hainan Province held that the defendant Li Weiwei's actions constituted the crime of bribery, with an exceptionally large amount of bribes and causing exceptionally serious losses to the interests of the state and the people, and should be punished according to law. Given that Li Weiwei's bribery crime involved attempted bribery, that she truthfully confessed her crimes after being apprehended, that she proactively disclosed most of the criminal facts not yet known to the supervisory authorities, that she pleaded guilty and showed remorse, that she actively returned the ill-gotten gains and cooperated in the recovery of the proceeds, and that the vast majority of the bribes and their interest have been recovered, she has statutory and discretionary grounds for leniency and can be given a lighter sentence according to law. The court therefore rendered the above judgment.
It is reported that the First Intermediate People's Court of Hainan Province held a public hearing on the case on November 6, 2025. During the trial, the prosecution presented relevant evidence, which was examined by the defendant Li Weiwei and her defense counsel. Both the prosecution and the defense fully expressed their opinions under the court's guidance. Li Weiwei made a final statement and pleaded guilty and expressed remorse in court. More than 20 people, including representatives of the National People's Congress, members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, journalists, and members of the public, attended the trial.
