According to a recent report released by the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, from January 1st to December 14th this year, Prey Veng province exported 2,941,420 tons of rice to Vietnam, generating US$836.67 million in revenue. This achievement has significantly boosted the agricultural economy of Prey Veng province.
Mr. Ng Son Nam, Director of the Prey Veng Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, stated that Prey Veng province's unique geographical conditions are highly suitable for growing rice and other crops. The secret to the high yield lies in the fact that farmers in most areas and towns of the province can cultivate rice two to three times a year. The average price of International Rice (IR) standard wet rice is 1,040 Cambodian Riel per kilogram, and the average price of Mekong Rice (OM) standard wet rice is 1,030 Cambodian Riel per kilogram. The rice is mainly exported to Vietnam through the Banteay Chakrei international border crossing in Preah Sdach district and the Koh Roka international border crossing in Peam Chor district of Prey Veng province.
Besides rice, Prey Veng province also achieved a bumper harvest of dry-season cash crops. The report shows that the planting area for white corn, watermelon, and chili peppers reached 862 hectares; the planting area for red corn, soybeans, peanuts, sesame, sugarcane, cassava, and lotus reached 2,086 hectares. Furthermore, as of December 14th, Prey Veng province exported 133,760 tons of fresh mangoes to Vietnam, at an average price of 714 riel per kilogram, generating approximately US$21.36 million in revenue.
Director N Song Nam emphasized that Prey Veng province will continue to dedicate itself to agricultural development, further improving the quantity and quality of agricultural products, and contributing more to local economic development. In the future, the province will continue to explore diversified agricultural development models to ensure sustainable growth of the agricultural economy.
