Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) Recently, the Ministry of Public Security deployed a campaign to promote the use of local police dog breeds, deeply exploring and unleashing the police potential of the excellent local breed—the Kunming Dog—significantly increasing its proportion in the national police dog force and promoting the development goal of "overall international first-class" police dog technology. This is an important measure to promote the high-quality development of police dog work in my country and serve the practical capabilities of public security, marking a significant step forward in my country's independent control and brand building of police dog breed resources.
It is understood that the breeding of the Kunming Dog began in the 1950s. Through decades of arduous efforts, the Kunming Police Dog Base of the Ministry of Public Security successfully bred this excellent working dog breed using a scientific group successive breeding method. In 1988, the breed passed the acceptance inspection of the Ministry of Public Security and was officially named "Kunming Dog". In 2007, the Kunming dog breed successfully passed the breed approval process of the National Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources Committee and was included in the "State of World Animal Genetic Resources" compiled by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, becoming China's first and currently only police dog breed with completely independent intellectual property rights to be included by an international organization. To date, research projects related to the Kunming dog have won numerous awards, including the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, highlighting its scientific and innovative value.
Having undergone decades of practical testing, the Kunming dog has been widely used in many fields such as public security, emergency management, and customs anti-smuggling. It has repeatedly made outstanding contributions in professional positions such as scent identification, track tracking, evidence search, counter-terrorism and emergency rescue, becoming a true "silent warrior." Furthermore, the Kunming dog has served as a friendly ambassador for international police cooperation, being promoted to more than 10 countries and regions, including Singapore, Vietnam, and Pakistan, winning widespread praise from international peers and becoming a shining "calling card" showcasing the technical strength of Chinese police dogs.
A relevant official from the Ministry of Public Security stated that global competition in police dog technology is becoming increasingly fierce. Having a stable supply of high-quality working dogs adapted to local environments is a core element for gaining the initiative in police dog technology development. The public security organs will focus on the breeding of Kunming dogs, integrating superior resources to form a comprehensive force encompassing research and development, breeding, training, use, and management. This will allow for in-depth exploration of their unique police value, laying a solid foundation for achieving independent control and continuous innovation in police dog technology.
