Southeast Asia Information Port News (www.dnyxxg.com) – According to a report from the Three Gorges Group on the 5th, the first set of hydrological rainfall radar systems on the main stream of the Yangtze River has been deployed at the Three Gorges Project, further enhancing the project's rainfall and flood monitoring and forecasting capabilities.

Traditional rainfall monitoring methods use rain gauges, but the data obtained is easily affected by the surrounding environment, limiting the monitoring range and failing to accurately reflect the spatiotemporal distribution of rainfall.

The new generation of rainfall radar systems effectively overcomes the limitations of traditional ground-based rain gauges, which only provide a "point-to-point" view of the weather. Like a "smart eye" deployed in the clouds, it uses a network of multiple rainfall radars to perform seamless, three-dimensional scanning of liquid water in the near-surface atmosphere, elevating rainfall monitoring from point-to-area perception to area-to-area insight. This enables refined monitoring and forecasting of rainfall within an area of approximately 13,000 square kilometers near the Three Gorges Dam. The system can provide effective early warnings for extreme rainstorms, adding another technological tool to the safe operation of the Three Gorges Project and flood control efforts along the Yangtze River.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the Ministry of Water Resources accelerated the construction of a three-tiered defense system for monitoring and forecasting rainfall and water conditions. The Three Gorges Project is one of the major water conservancy projects included in the pilot project for the construction and application of rainfall-measuring radar, the "first line of defense."

According to the plan, the first rainfall-measuring radar system on the Yangtze River main stream will enter formal operation by the end of 2026.

Next, the Three Gorges Group's Basin Management Center will focus on promoting data quality control of the rainfall-measuring radar, improving platform functions, and deepening intelligent applications, continuing to strengthen the safety barrier of this major national project. (End)
