
Southeast Asia Information Port (www.dnyxxg.com) – The Lao government, at a recent cabinet meeting, agreed in principle to adopt the "National Ten-Year Socio-Economic Development Strategy 2026-2035 and Vision 2055," and finalized a series of legal and policy reforms to improve development planning and strengthen the regulatory framework.
The Lao government cabinet meeting, held from Tuesday to Wednesday this week, was chaired by Prime Minister Somsay Siphandone. Following the meeting, Minister of the Prime Minister's Office and Government Spokesperson Somsay Siphaxay held a press conference on Wednesday to inform the media of the meeting's key outcomes.
The first item on the agenda focused on urgent priorities, reviewing the "Tenth National Socio-Economic Development Plan (Draft) 2026-2030" submitted by the Prime Minister; progress on addressing the land subsidence issue in Thongmang village, Xaythany district, Vientiane was also heard, the tourism industry's development in 2025 was reviewed, and the future direction of the industry was clarified. The meeting requested relevant departments to refine the report based on the Cabinet's feedback, ensuring the plan aligns with the country's development realities and remains consistent with the established goals of the 12th National Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, with a focus on the development of the mining and tourism sectors.
The second item on the agenda was the government's approval, in principle, of four legal and policy documents: the Electric Vehicle Use Policy, the "National Ten-Year Socio-Economic Development Strategy 2026-2035 and Vision 2055," the draft decree on the transport of dangerous goods, and the draft decree on non-governmental organizations. Relevant departments were instructed to further optimize the drafts to ensure their effective implementation.
In addition, the meeting distributed five documents for written feedback, including: a summary of unfinished work in January and February and an action plan for March; a draft resolution on the 2026 Road Construction and Improvement Plan; a draft resolution on the 2026-2030 Tax Administration Modernization Plan; an agreement on the list of topics for government meetings in 2026; and a draft resolution revising the division of responsibilities for implementing the resolution on building an independent economy.
The meeting also clarified the priority tasks for March: In the security field, strengthen national defense and public security, intensify efforts to prevent road traffic accidents and fires, curb drug problems, and severely crack down on fraud gangs and online defamation against the Party and the state. In the economic field, continue to address financial and economic challenges, stabilize price fluctuations, and resolve the problem of pork oversupply; accelerate the modernization of tax collection and management, advance planned road and bridge construction, and strengthen forest fire prevention and control in tourist destinations and river basins. In the education and health field, improve the quality of education and scientific research to help the country achieve self-reliance; optimize medical services and promote the gradual self-sufficiency of hospitals. In the tourism field, improve infrastructure in key tourist destinations, strengthen the supervision of travel agencies, hotels, and entertainment venues, regulate the industry's legal operation, and ensure tourist safety. In the diplomatic field, implement the outcomes of recent international summits and cooperation plans with friendly countries, and prepare for visits by foreign leaders.
